Mac Lethal vs. Tom MacDonald

In May of 2019, YouTuber/rapper Mac Lethal made a few Tweets criticizing another rapper for saying that white men are oppressed. Quickly-growing rapper Tom MacDonald thought that Mac was saying all these things about him because of his single Straight White Male. When Tom called out Mac Lethal, he mentioned that Mac Lethal was "irrelevant" and simply said that he was better than Mac. Afterwards Mac Lethal and Tom MacDonald had a small back-and-forth on Instagram until, on June 1, 2019, Tom MacDonald released the song Lethal Injection, his Mac Lethal diss track.
And then, on June 5, Mac Lethal responded to Tom MacDonald's diss with his own diss track. When Mac released the track, he said that he wouldn't make another response even if Tom made another diss. And unsurprisingly, Tom MacDonald released his second Mac Lethal diss track on June 7, 2019. The song was simply called "Mac Lethal Sucks," and it was the ending to the beef.
Ever since this strange feud happened, the two rappers have moved on and continued to focus on their own art. No one is really talking about this battle anymore but I often find myself coming back to it. And, as usual, I also find myself having the unpopular opinion.
Once Tom MacDonald released his second diss track, nearly everyone unanimously agreed that Tom won and Mac Lethal lost. But after listening to their tracks time and time again, I just don't see it. And I want to explain my thoughts on this little feud between Tom MacDonald and Mac Lethal.
In Lethal Injection, Tom MacDonald actually has some decent writing. The flow in this track is fairly solid and his punchlines are halfway-decent. But his overall performance in this song isn't the most impressive in the world. I've listened to other songs by Tom and he has definitely proven that he can rap but in this track I just hate his vibe. He gives off this weird style of both mumble and lyrical rap and I just don't like the sound of it. But of course, this is a diss track, not just a song. So, I obviously need to talk about the shots he takes at Mac Lethal. If I'm being honest, it's nothing to write home about. In this track his disses are essentially about Mac's age, Mac's wealth and relevancy and Mac's drug addiction. He does also say that Mac is ugly and throws a few jabs towards his family. And something I need to make clear is how empty it is to diss someone about their age. It's like if I made a diss on someone in their twenties and just called them a boomer for 3 minutes. Machine Gun Kelly got totaled by Eminem mainly because all he did was call Eminem old. So, all of those disses are immediately valueless. And for some reason, Tom talked about Mac Lethal's views and money. I would agree that Mac Lethal is less relevant than he has been, but he is still such an icon that his views really don't matter. And because of how important he has been, money is no problem for him at all and bringing that up was just stupid. As I said, Tom MacDonald also discussed Mac Lethal's history with drugs. First of all, Mac Lethal started taking drugs because his mother died. Second of all, Mac has been drug-free for nearly a decade, so, this point had no point to it. It's as irrelevant as can be. Calling your opponent ugly isn't a hard jab. It's just not. You sound like a toddler on the playground. I did say that Tom also mentioned Mac's family but all of the disses surrounding that were just about the other points that I've mentioned. So, this diss track really isn't that good. It's not the worst to ever exist but it certainly isn't anything that'll cut deep. It's bland and empty and didn't make Mac Lethal look bad at all, to be fair.
And then of course, we have Mac Lethal's response. And this is one of the most underrated diss tracks in history. In the song Mac throws jabs at Tom's looks, political views, how pathetic he is, his girlfriend, his past in "wrestling" and his current work and so much more. This track is insane. In the track Mac's flow is kind of just decent. But his punchlines are out of this fucking world! I do need to prove that I am not biased though. As I said, insulting your opponent about the way they look isn't a very good diss. But Mac Lethal said it in so many ways that were just so hard and complex. Mac says so much more in this song compared to Tom and he says it all in such a hard-hitting way. If I'm being totally honest, neither of them threw very tough disses at each other. Normally, I would expect more jabs at each other in a diss battle. But regardless, Mac Lethal won the first round by far. If you like Tom's song more as a song rather than a diss, obviously that's fine. You can enjoy whatever you enjoy. But breaking down these songs from a more technical standpoint, Mac kicked some serious ass!
But of course, Tom made a second diss. I'm not sure if he made this for extra attention to his name or if he felt hurt by some words from Mac or if there's another possibility but regardless of the reason, he made another diss. And I will say, this is a better song. But the fact that people think Tom MacDonald won this whole battle with this song is mind-boggling. In this track Tom MacDonald talks about Mac's drug addiction from ten-years-ago again, brings up his family again, says that Mac is bald and gets so, so much information blatantly incorrect. Once again, I do think this track is better. Tom MacDonald had a really damn good flow in this song. His punchlines were better than the last ones and he actually rapped pretty fast in some parts. But he still didn't say much. The reason that people think Tom MacDonald won this battle is because of a simple thing. Tom, in his second diss track, said that he would chain up Mac's wife and remove her eggs so they couldn't have more kids, that he'd burn Mac and his pet bird in the oven and he said that Mac is going to kill his whole family and himself. I will admit, he said all of those disses in a pretty cool way and as I stated before, I think his flow was impressive in this song. I just can't understand why those disses were seen as impressive rather than just over-the-top. Like, yes, those are some harsh words from Tom to Mac. But it isn't anything that'll cut deep because it is just an over-worded way of saying "you shouldn't be a dad," or "you're gonna go crazy after I release this song," it really isn't anything that deep because there isn't a strong meaning behind it. He's just talking with nothing behind the words that he's saying.
That was pretty much the end of this entire battle. To this day, all of Tom MacDonald's fans are saying that he bodied Mac Lethal. But I just don't see it. Mac had some really dope punchlines and Tom MacDonald just talked a lot. I do feel the need to say that I have nothing but respect for both of these artists. They are both very talented and I have nothing against either of them. This was just my take on one rap beef from a while back and I wish them both nothing but positivity in the future.
