The Brilliance of BoJack Horseman

02/12/2020

If you've talked to me enough, you know about my love for BoJack Horseman!

BoJack Horseman was created by Raphael Matthew Bob-Waksberg and was released on Netflix in 2014. The show stars a lot of amazing actors/voice actors such as Will Arnett, Aaron Paul, Amy Sedaris and many more.

The story follows BoJack, a famous television star and his downfall since the cancellation of his show back in the 1990's. But the show also branches off into the stories of many other characters like Todd, Princess Carolyn, Mr. Peanut Butter, Diane and many, many, many more!

BoJack Horseman is my favorite show of all time and there are many reasons for that.

The Netflix original show is one of the most unique pieces of media in history. Although, I do really like shows like Family Guy and Big Mouth, BoJack Horseman is so different than these other adult cartoons. There are serious moments in practically every show ever but BoJack isn't very joke based compared to most. Comparing BoJack to another big Netflix show; Big Mouth is an amazing show if you want a good laugh. Yes, there are some serious topics in the show like when Jessie's parents get divorced. But Big Mouth is still a hilarious and obnoxious show that doesn't frequently trigger emotions. And BoJack Horseman is also labeled a comedy but it hardly fits under that category. The show has such serious messaging and every important plot-point isn't at all comedic. BoJack Horseman is unlike any other. It's an explicit cartoon for adults that has really well written comedy but a very intense and dark plot with amazing messaging. Nothing else fits under that category in the same way. This animated series is insanely creative and it's so well made!

If you didn't read my blog, "Why I (Usually) Hate Movies", I will reiterate here what I said makes a good movie (or show).

A good show or movie has:

-creative and developing characters with genuine feelings and personality

-multiple settings that make sense and are well-portrayed

-a plot that is interesting, developing, original and enjoyable

-each plot-point needs to have a motive

-and to go from good to amazing, I would like to see a very strong message that isn't expressed enough in media

BoJack Horseman has every single trait I said a good show needs. The characters develop an incredible amount over the series and each and every one of them has emotions! The expression of the characters is amazing and although it is animated, it never feels fake. And it also has many different settings that are very well-portrayed! A great example is in season 4, when BoJack went to the cabin that he would visit in the summers as a child. It felt random and almost felt useless after it was eventually demolished. But it was eventually made clear that the cabin was a very important symbol behind MULTIPLE characters! And of course the plot is amazing. In simple form, the plot is BoJack Horseman trying to get out of his depressive mental state. In non simple form, it's impossible to explain. Because this 6-season-show is all one story but changes constantly. And although it does change constantly, it is so brilliant. Each plot-point ends up being very important and you will definitely see that if you finish the series. And don't worry, this show does not disappoint! It also has the final thing a perfect show needs; the message. This show covers mental health, addiction, neglect, abuse, parenthood, betrayal, sexuality, various political topics and so much more. BoJack Horseman is literally one of the most important shows in history because of all the messaging. It's portrayed in multiple, amazing ways and it's miraculous!

If you read my review of Joker, you would know that I gave a lot of credit to the film because of it's message regarding mental health. And I do believe mental health is one of the most important topics that needs to be discussed more. And BoJack Horseman covers this topic in brilliant ways and also discusses many other important topics that are important!

Raphael Matthew Bob-Waksberg is legitimately a genius and BoJack Horseman is an incredible piece of art. I love a lot of different kinds of TV shows. Family Guy, Big Mouth, The Simpsons and Rick and Morty are amazing adult cartoons that do occasionally cover serious topics but are generally just good comedies. BoJack Horseman doesn't fit in with any of these shows.

BoJack Horseman is one of the most miraculous pieces of media to ever exist and I, personally, love it to death.
